Sun Protection

Sun Protection Factor (SPF)

All sunscreens are labeled with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number. This number relates to the length of time a sunscreen product will allow your skin to be exposed to UV rays without burning. The sunscreen SPF rating is calculated by comparing the relative amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on unprotected skin to the amount of time needed to produce a similar sunburn on protected skin.

For example, if a person normally burns after 10 minutes in the sun without protection, an SPF-15 product will allow that person to stay in the sun for approximately 15 times longer to produce the same relative exposure.

The formula is: 10 (minutes) x 15 (SPF) = 150 minutes, or 2.5 hours.

In other words, if your sunscreen is SPF-15, it will take you 15 times as much sun exposure to get sunburned as compared to wearing no sunscreen at all.

The unique properties of Zinc Oxide in Brazilian Tropic® SPF products provides an effective broad spectrum range of protection from 290 nm through 700 nm wavelengths, that effectively deflects the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Brazilian Tropic® Sun SPF-30 and Face SPF-18 formulas provide a layer of protection that is also photostable. In other words will not break down and lose effectiveness with exposure to UV radiation.

Individuals vary widely in their sensitivity to sunlight exposure. Other factors that affect sun sensitivity include: time of day the exposure occurs, time of the year, your latitude and altitude and occasionally your attitude.

It is important to understand that sunscreens filter UV rays, not completely block them. Therefore sunscreens will reduce the dose of sunburn you will receive relative to no protection at all. Always use a combination of sun protection measures.

Sunscreen protection should be of primary concern with children because there is more time and opportunity for subsequent sun damage to occur. Increased exposure to UV radiation and frequency of sunburns experienced at an early age increases risk of developing skin cancer years later.

Brazilian Tropic’s® enriched hydrating lotion absorbs quickly into the skin with no harsh chemicals and is very safe for children. Our Sun Protection products are uniquely formulated to moisturize, soothe and help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Understanding ultraviolet (UV) radiation:

The sun emits a spectrum of light that includes invisible ultraviolet radiation that ranges from 100nm through 400nm in wavelength. This UV spectrum is further divided into three sub-sections as follows:

UVA - Ultraviolet radiation in the range 315 nanometers (nm) to 400 nm has the capacity to penetrate deep into the dermis without causing sunburn (erythema) and cannot be measured in the SPF testing. UVA contributes to DNA damage, skin cancer, including malignant melanoma, as well as premature aging and wrinkling of the skin, due to elastin and collagen fiber breakdown.

UVB - Ultraviolet radiation in the range 280 nm to 315 nm are partially absorbed by the ozone layer. They do not penetrate the skin as far as the UVA rays do and are the primary cause of sunburn. They are also responsible for most of the tissue damage which results in wrinkles and aging of the skin and are implicated in cataract formation.

UVC - Ultraviolet radiation in the range 100 nm to 280 nm is extremely dangerous but does not reach the earth's surface due to absorption in the atmosphere.

The SPF number on sunscreens only refers to the product's ability to filter UVB rays. At present, there is no FDA approved rating system that identifies UVA protection. It is very important that your sunscreen block both UVA and UVB rays.

Most sunscreens contain active ingredients that protect you from the UVB (burning rays) and only provide minimal protection from the more penetrating UVA (laser beam death rays). Brazilian Tropic® uses a Zinc Oxide as the active ingredient to effectively attenuate both the UVA and UVB wavelengths from reaching your skin and causing damage.

Why Zinc Oxide

The unique properties of Zinc Oxide in Brazilian Tropic® products provides an effective broad spectrum range of protection from 290 nm through 700 nm wavelengths, that effectively deflects the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Brazilian Tropic's® Sun SPF-30 and Face SPF-18 formulas provide a layer of protection that is also photostable. In other words will not break down and lose effectiveness with exposure to UV radiation.

Brazilian Tropic® sun protection products use Zinc Oxide as the active ingredient due to its superior sun protection qualities. Physical sunscreens (Zinc Oxide) work by reflecting the photons of the UV spectrum with no chemical reaction or secondary free radical activity.

Our natural Sun SPF-30 and Face SPF-18 products are formulated with ZinClear that goes on completely clear and absorbs quickly into the skin with no harsh chemicals. This unique blend of natural minerals, antioxidants and soothing plant extracts are formulated to moisturize, soothe and help protect your skin from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays.

The following chart shows the range of protection for sunscreen active ingredients:

Green Tea Extract

GREEN TEA (Camellia Sinensis): Green tea extract is a very powerful antioxidant and is widely considered to have many anti-cancer support properties. It also contains many oils, vitamins and minerals, as well as the naturally-occurring properties known as polyphenols that protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals generated by the adverse biological effects of UV exposure.
